Re: Utah Rave Raided by SWAT/military style police!
Fri, November 4, 2005 - 10:55 AMok, does everyone realise what utah is!!!!!
it's the mormon capital of the world, they shun everybody and everything that is remotely different from them. it is an extremely republican state.
there's a reason that this happened in utah and not anywhere else.
I am not surprised.
If this happened in CA or NY I'd be pissed... I'd be up in arms like the rest of you.... but this is UTAH! they know nothing and fear everything! This state has barely left the AMISH era.
they did what they felt they had to to protect their sheltered lives. It sucks, but i am not upset. -

Re: Utah Rave Raided by SWAT/military style police!
Wed, November 23, 2005 - 1:23 PMYour apathy is disturbing.
Think about it this way, my friend...people look to California as a litmus test for what is coming on the Liberal front. People have accepted that what happens there first generally will spread.
Now, what if we look at Utah as a litmus test for conservatism. You are absolutely correct that they are a religous state with odd customs and a Republican voting record...but in light of what is happening around the country, to our Supreme Court and in our own backyards this should really be a red flag for anyone who is concerned.
And, for the record, the Amish are generally from Pennsylvania. Shakers live in the Midwest...Mormons, or as they are referred to now - those who attend the Church of Later Day Saints - are an extremely powerful entity both econcomically and politically.
People everywhere deserve the same freedoms you so selfishly enjoy - to be persecuted for dancing in a legally sanctioned venue crosses a very important line...it's called the violation of our civil liberties. You should investigate what that means as, well...they're constantly under attack, especially now.
Do you know what's happening to the Supreme Court? Do you know who's making decisions about your body? About who you can marry? About teaching Creationism in Schools? About the war in Iraq and why it's totally insane that Muthda is speaking out? About the Ohio Congresswoman who called him a coward and was BOO'd off the podium - on the Floor of the House?
Are you angry? Are you worried? Are you scared? If you're not, you're obviously not paying attention - or have VASTLY different political views than I do. Peace Love Unity Respect my eye, then.
As to your sweeping generalizations about Mormons in Utah...Just because you don't understand them, don't dismiss them. That's what I'm sure you complain about - people misunderstanding you, then dismissing you. I know I used to. I think we all did.
My thoughts, personally, is that if you're so dismissive of this issue, you'll be dismissive of much much more. Enjoy your freedom now, especially as you cast stones. I myself don't live in a glass house; mine is built with acquired knowledge and experiential learnings.
I think Martin Luther King said it best: "Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
Much Love.

Re: Utah Rave Raided by SWAT/military style police!
Sat, December 3, 2005 - 10:19 AMI think the issue here is the difference between being upset and being surprised. Whenever I hear of some crooked act that Bush is pulling off, I just nod my head and growl. Watching Fahrenheit 9/11 was a joy, but not exactly a life-changing experience since there isn't a single crime I can think of that this administration isn't capable of committing. Does that mean I'm not upset? Absolutely NOT!!! I'm merely more prepared emotionally for the bad news when I hear it.
Looking back at everything I've learned about how the law and media has dealt with raves, I'm not surprised about how this Utah incident turned out. But kids got hurt in the bust for no necessary reason. If I was a parent of one of those kids, I'd be storming the police station demanding the suspension of the bastards who injured my child.
Experience & knowledge provides me with certain expectations of what injustices are going to occur in our society. But expecting something fucked up to happen shouldn't be the same as accepting or tolerating it. Instead, it should mean being more prepared to prevent it.
